Dallas, Welcome to Houston

Cowboys fans, we know why y’all are coming.

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, Dallas heads down I-45 to face the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium, with kickoff set for 12:00 PM CT on FOX.

And this one has a little extra Houston history attached to it: the Texans have designated Cowboys week as their 25th Season Game, with Texans Legends returning for the anniversary game.

But with a noon kickoff, your real Houston weekend happens before Sunday.

If you’re getting into town Friday night or Saturday morning, you’ve basically got one good shot to eat Houston food, catch the culture, hit the nightlife and actually experience the city before football takes over.

So this is not another copy-and-paste “10 things to do in Houston” list.

This is how we’d spend Cowboys-Texans weekend if we had one weekend to show our Dallas cousins what Houston is really about.

And yes, we said cousins. Don’t get comfortable. 😂

Cowboys vs. Texans Weekend: The Quick Hit List

Need the calendar before the commentary? We got you.

  • Oct. 2 to 4: Untitled Art, Houston at George R. Brown Convention Center. The contemporary art fair returns for its second Houston edition with 99 galleries from 20 countries and territories.
  • Friday night: Check in, eat somewhere Houston, easy night out.
  • Saturday morning: Brunch, explore Third Ward or another Houston neighborhood.
  • Saturday afternoon: Ride Trill On Wheels, bar stops, Houston culture.
  • Saturday night: Midtown, Downtown, EaDo, Third Ward or Montrose.
  • Sunday morning: Tailgate, Reliant Stadium.
  • Sunday at noon: Cowboys vs. Texans, the Texans’ 25th Season Game with Texans Legends returning. Talk your trash responsibly. 😂

The main thing to remember: Sunday is for football. Saturday is for Houston.

Friday Night: Ease Into Houston

If you made the drive down I-45 after work Friday, nobody needs a seven-stop itinerary waiting on them.

Check into the hotel. Drop the bags. Eat well. Catch a vibe.

The biggest mistake first-time visitors make is thinking everything in Houston is sitting next to everything else. It is not. Houston is spread out, which means where you stay matters.

If you want restaurants, bars and nightlife around you, Downtown or Midtown are solid options. If the football game is basically your whole trip, staying closer to Reliant Stadium or the Medical Center makes more sense.

But if you want to experience Houston Friday and Saturday? We’d stay closer to the action and save the stadium area for Sunday.

Historic Third Ward Houston neighborhood and Black cultural landmarks

Saturday Is Your Real Houston Day

Sunday belongs to football. Saturday belongs to Houston.

And if you only have one full day here, please do not spend all of it sitting inside another sports bar watching College GameDay.

Go see the city. Houston has neighborhoods with completely different personalities, but if you want somewhere with a story behind it, start with Historic Third Ward.

Third Ward is one of the centers of Black Houston history, music, culture and creativity. It’s also where Trill On Wheels calls home.

The murals. The people. Texas Southern University. Emancipation Park. Houston music history.

This is the Houston you’re not going to experience from a parking lot outside the stadium.

See Houston Before Game Day With Trill On Wheels

You could absolutely spend Saturday sitting at another bar.

Or…

You could hop on a 100% motorized Hip-Hop Party Bike, ride through Historic Third Ward with a Trappin’ Captain, hit bar stops, play Trill Trivia, sing way too confidently during Trap Karaoke and meet a bunch of people who were strangers 20 minutes ago.

That’s Trill On Wheels.

And before somebody from Dallas asks: no. You do not have to pedal. 😂

We built this experience because Houston needed something that felt like us. Hip-hop. R&B. Houston culture. Black joy. A whole lot of personality.

If your crew is coming down for Cowboys weekend and wants something everybody can do together before game day, Saturday is your window.

Houston is a foodie's paradise, offering an incredible diversity of flavors. From world-class BBQ to authentic Tex-Mex and soul food that will tantalize your taste buds, the city's culinary scene is as vibrant and diverse as its culture. Here are some must-try restaurants: **BBQ:** * Gatlin's BBQ * Truth BBQ **Tex-Mex:** * Ninfa's on Navigation **Soul Food:** * The Breakfast Klub **Seafood:** * Pappadeaux

What Should Cowboys Fans Eat in Houston?

You could Google “best restaurants in Houston” and lose two hours of your life. Let’s make it easier.

Houston is not famous for one food. That’s the whole point. The city’s food identity comes from cultures running into each other and creating something different.

But we also don’t want to hide behind generic cuisine categories. If we’re telling Dallas visitors how we’d actually spend the weekend, we should name a few real Houston spots.

The Breakfast Klub, Midtown. A Houston breakfast institution at 3711 Travis. If Saturday starts with wings and waffles or katfish and grits, you’re doing fine.

The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation, East End. The historic Navigation location is a strong Tex-Mex choice and a natural fit if your weekend takes you through EaDo or the East End.

Truth BBQ, Heights. If the crew wants a serious Texas barbecue stop, Truth’s Houston location on S Heights Boulevard is built around brisket, ribs, sausage and scratch-made sides.

Lucille’s, Museum District. A strong option if you’re pairing food with the Museum District and want Southern cooking with Houston history behind it.

Ray’s Real Pit BBQ Shack, Third Ward/Riverside area. A neighborhood barbecue option that keeps the itinerary closer to the part of Houston Trill calls home.

You do not need to hit all five. Pick the one that fits the neighborhood you’re already exploring and stop turning Houston traffic into an attraction.

And please, do not drive three hours from Dallas just to eat somewhere you could’ve eaten in Frisco. We love y’all too much for that.

Houston Nightlife Is Not One Neighborhood

One of the questions people keep asking online is: does Houston have good nightlife?

Fam. Yes. 😂

The better question is what kind of night you want.

Midtown works if you want several bars and restaurants fairly close together.

Downtown brings rooftops, lounges and big-city energy.

EaDo gives you sports bars, murals, breweries and a younger crowd.

Montrose is more eclectic.

Third Ward brings Black Houston culture, local bars and a different kind of Houston energy.

But here’s the key: do not try to “do Houston” by bouncing between six neighborhoods in one night. This city will humble you.

Pick one or two areas. Build the night around them. Actually enjoy yourself. Your group chat will survive skipping one TikTok restaurant.

Houston's downtown area is a vibrant canvas, featuring a diverse collection of murals that reflect the city's rich culture and creative spirit. These street art masterpieces transform ordinary walls into captivating visual stories, offering a unique and immersive experience for both locals and visitors. From bold, colorful designs to thought-provoking social commentary, the downtown murals showcase the talent of local and international artists, adding a dynamic and energetic layer to the urban landscape. Exploring these artworks is like taking an outdoor gallery tour, revealing the heart and soul of Houston through its street art.

Where Should You Stay for Cowboys vs. Texans?

You do not need a list of 25 hotels. You need to decide what matters most.

If the game is basically your whole reason for coming, staying near Reliant Stadium or the Medical Center makes life easier Sunday morning.

If you want Friday and Saturday nightlife, Downtown or Midtown may make more sense.

If you want something in between, the Museum District or Medical Center can give you easier access to both the stadium and central Houston.

There is no single “best” neighborhood. The right answer depends on whether your weekend is mostly about the game, the party, or both.

What's Actually Near Reliant Stadium?

First things first. Reliant Stadium is the same building most people have known for years as NRG Stadium.

The venue returned to the Reliant Stadium name in August 2026 after operating as NRG Stadium since 2014. So if you still see “NRG Stadium” in search results, you’re looking at the right place.

The stadium sits near the Texas Medical Center and not far from the Museum District. There are hotels, restaurants, museums, parks and transit options nearby.

But here’s the part we’d tell a friend: do not build your entire Saturday around the stadium. Houston’s most interesting food, nightlife and cultural neighborhoods are spread across the city.

Sunday is for Reliant. Saturday is for Houston.

Sunday: Now We Can Fight

Alright. Now we can talk football. 😂

With a noon kickoff, this is not the Sunday to sleep until 10:30 and figure things out later. Get moving early.

Texans parking lots generally open four hours before kickoff, with the Platinum Lot opening five hours before kickoff.

If you already have stadium parking handled, cool. If you do not, the Texans encourage fans without parking to use rideshare or public transportation. The current Texans rideshare pickup and drop-off location is Yellow Lot 35, Gate 16B off Main Street. METRORail is also available for Texans home games.

And if somebody in the crew says “I don’t have a game ticket, I’ll just come tailgate,” make sure they understand the current stadium rule before Sunday morning: during NFL season, guests entering Reliant Stadium property need either a game ticket or a tailgate ticket, with tickets required for guests over age two.

This is the kind of stuff you want handled Saturday night. Not while everybody is standing outside the stadium arguing in matching jerseys.

Turn Cowboys Weekend Into a Real Houston Weekend

This is where visitors usually mess up. They come for one event. They do the event. They grab brunch. Airport.

Nah.

You drove down here. Give Houston a real weekend.

The Trill Weekend Formula

DAY ONE: Check in, eat local, nightlife.

DAY TWO: Brunch, explore Houston, Trill On Wheels, Saturday night.

DAY THREE: Coffee, tailgate, Cowboys vs. Texans, drive home talking crazy in the group chat.

Simple. You came for football. That does not mean football has to be the only thing you remember.

Building a whole weekend around one event is exactly what our Houston birthday weekend guide is built around too, if you want another example of how we’d do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does Houston have good nightlife?
Yes. Houston has strong nightlife, but it is spread across neighborhoods rather than concentrated into one single district. Midtown, Downtown, EaDo, Montrose and Third Ward all offer different experiences, so pick one or two areas instead of spending the night crossing the city.

Q: Which city has better nightlife, Houston or Dallas?
Both cities have major nightlife scenes, but they work differently. Houston’s strength is variety across distinct neighborhoods and cultures. For a short Cowboys weekend, the smarter move is not trying to beat Dallas. Pick the Houston experience your group actually wants and build the night around it.

Q: What street in Houston has all the bars?
Houston does not have one universal bar street that represents the whole city. Downtown’s Main Street and parts of Midtown offer clusters of nightlife, while EaDo, Montrose and Third Ward each have their own scenes. Houston is too spread out to treat it like one walkable strip.

Q: What should adults do in Houston at night?
Choose a neighborhood, eat somewhere local, then build around nightlife, live music, lounges, sports bars or a group experience such as Trill On Wheels. The key is planning geographically instead of spending half the night in rideshares.

Q: What should I do with one night in Houston?
If you only have one night, do not try to cross the whole city. Pick one neighborhood or one compact plan: eat somewhere local, choose a nightlife area that fits your group, and build the night around that. If your one night is Saturday before the Cowboys-Texans game, Third Ward plus a Trill On Wheels experience gives you food, music, culture and nightlife without pretending you can do all of Houston in a few hours.

Q: Where should Black travelers go in Houston?
Start with Historic Third Ward for Black Houston history, culture, food and nightlife. Emancipation Park, Texas Southern University, local restaurants and neighborhood businesses make Third Ward more than a quick photo stop. Midtown and Downtown can also work well for nightlife and cultural attractions, but Third Ward is where we’d send visitors who want deeper Black Houston context.

Q: What are some hidden gems to visit in Houston?
Look beyond the stadium and the biggest tourist stops. Third Ward, local murals, neighborhood restaurants, Houston’s independent arts scene and culturally specific experiences can tell you more about the city than another generic attraction list.

Q: What is there to do near Reliant Stadium?
Reliant Stadium is near the Texas Medical Center and Museum District, with restaurants, hotels, museums, parks and transit nearby. For a fuller Houston experience, use Friday or Saturday to explore beyond the stadium area.

Q: Is Reliant Stadium the same as NRG Stadium?
Yes. Same stadium. The Reliant Stadium name returned in August 2026 after the venue operated as NRG Stadium from 2014 through summer 2026.

Q: Should I drive, rideshare or take METRORail to the Texans game?
All three can work. Driving makes sense if parking is already handled. The Texans designate Yellow Lot 35 for rideshare, and METRORail is available for Texans home games. Check the Texans’ current game-day guidance before leaving for the stadium.

Come for the Cowboys. Leave With a Little Houston in You.

You bought the ticket because Dallas is playing Houston. We get it.

But don’t drive down I-45, spend the whole weekend inside a hotel, sports bar and stadium parking lot, then tell everybody you “did Houston.”

Nah. Eat here. Meet people here. Hear our music. See our neighborhoods. Catch the culture.

And when Saturday rolls around, come ride with us. Sunday can belong to football. Saturday gets Trill.
